Traditional Shotokan Karate
As time went by more karate-ka living in New Zealand from South Africa, the United Kingdom and the
Middle East joined the dojo. Thus the Karate Union of New Zealand was formally established and
several of the experienced dan grades opened their own dojo under the KUNZ banner in Auckland,
Wellington and Christchurch.
When Sensei passed away after a long battle with illness, the KUNZ structure weakened with some of
the dojo heads choosing to affiliate elsewhere or closing their dojos.
However, Sensei's dojo still continued on, with Karl Anderson 4th Dan taking over teaching
duties.
In 2007 the Karate Union of New Zealand voted unanimously to formalise our affiliations with Japan.
Presently we have dan grades who were / are members of JKA, SKIF, JKA-SA, KUGB, JSKA and JKS.

The Karate Union of New Zealand was established by the late Sensei Jason Williams 5th Dan JKA.
Williams Sensei arrived in New Zealand and discovered that the various Shotokan groups were
fragmented. Reluctant to be involved in the politics of Karate, Sensei did not affiliate with any of
the karate organisations and simply began teaching at the local church hall and after 18 months he
had more than 50 students. Despite not being affiliated with any organisation, Sensei continued to
make the annual trip to Japan to train and refine his technique.
